Today marks the third Sunday of December, and it is a special day of celebration because it is Gaudete Sunday. In Latin, gaudete simply means "rejoice". For us Catholics, it is the Sunday in Advent where we light the only pink candle in the Advent wreath. Rejoice. We rejoice when we get new stuff - a new car, a new phone, a new dog. We rejoice when our underdog teams beat all odds and make it to the finals to grab the silver medal in the tournament. We rejoice when we feel that we are loved, and we are valued.
And then what?
Do we stop rejoicing when the feeling is gone, when reality sinks in yet again and we realize that we all have our bitter pills to swallow? Are we pursuing pleasure, or finding happiness? Is our rejoicing anchored on things temporal and material, or on something we find deep inside ourselves?
True rejoicing is found only on the Lord. Find God and you will experience true rejoicing. Stop seeking pleasure, and start looking for happiness. To rejoice is to be joyful and grateful in any circumstance. Rejoice, my friends. Rejoice!
