It was the second wedding I've attended within a week, and for this celebration, I was once again invited to serenade the couple, along with other musicians, as a violinist. I guess it's safe to say that our kind, violin players, is a rare find. Across my network of thousands of professionals around the metropolis, I've only known a handful of persons who play the same instrument as I do, and only one of them persists as a violinist to date.
Given the rarity of our bloodline, I often get invited to several weddings, even though I haven't had a significant relationship with the couples getting married. For me, it has always been both a boon and a bane to be invited time and time again as a musician. It is certainly an added burden to be rehearsing and spending time honing my craft in times when I could simply be resting, hanging out with friends, or reading a book. But, it is also a huge blessing to see the look in the eyes of men and women in love and hearing them vow their eternal fidelity to each other.
In a world full of hate and suffering, a little dose of love certainly lights a glint of hope, doesn't it? As much as it is troublesome, being a violinist will always be a part of me that I will always be thankful for. It is a gift that keeps on giving, and it is a gift that I will keep on giving.
